Packaging Technology & Sustainability
Internship at Unilever.
Supported the Sustainability and Digital teams within Unilever’s Packaging Capability Department. Contributed to ongoing projects aimed at making packaging more sustainable and communicating sustainability stories to consumers in futuristic, engaging, and innovative ways.
Assisted in the development of creative concepts and digital strategies that aligned with both environmental goals and brand storytelling. Worked on designing and building a plastic project tracker and its interface that supported overview and the possibility to track the packaging process towards reaching the sustainability goals. Gained hands-on experience in sustainable design, cross-functional collaboration, and future-oriented packaging innovation.
(Signed an NDA, minimal information on projects is given. Request additional information during personal meeting.)
Role/ Packaging Engineer & UI Designer
Duration/ 2021, 7 Months
01 . Project Plastic Tracker
I helped the sustainability capability team developing a dashboard plastic tracker that consisted of 4 different plastic tracker files. That helped give overview for all the different packaging, marketing and other relevant teams that need information or work on packaging related developments. I kept track on the files, gathered data and build some interface examples in Figma for the Plastic Tracker dashboard.
02 . Sustainability claims tool
The purpose for this project was to develop a digital tool that will identify current claims (or lack of it) on packaging and secondly provide information on the claims that can be made and how to transform into stories with its design. Divided in three different phases I focused mainly on the first 2 phases where I created a small concept data base for the ice cream company with all the sustainability claims. Further on I made a project plan with all the needed steps, stakeholders and goals.
03. Paper based packaging
For this task I had to search for innovative solutions for packaging to reduce the amount of plastic by changing the material to paper. By using data from the Terrapack tool, opportunities for reducing plastic use can be suggested.
04 . Refill/re-use
The purpose of this project was to explore how refill and reuse systems could be integrated into everyday scenarios to reduce plastic waste. As these systems are rapidly emerging, our aim was to evaluate their potential impact while also identifying possible drawbacks to create a balanced understanding of their feasibility.
Through brainstorming, scenario mapping, and critical analysis, we examined both the opportunities and limitations of refill/reuse solutions. This process allowed us to outline key challenges, anticipate user and system needs, and ultimately develop a set of innovation opportunities that support more sustainable consumption practices.
5 . Consumer experience
This project aimed to create a next-level consumer experience by integrating emerging digital trends directly into packaging. By exploring multi-sensory interactions, gamification, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence, we investigated how packaging can evolve from a static touchpoint into an engaging, dynamic, and interactive experience.
The goal was to identify opportunities where digital elements enhance user engagement and add meaningful value to the product experience.
